Limerick Man Receives Decade-Long Driving Ban After Multiple Offences
A man appearing before Limerick District Court has been disqualified from driving for ten years and sentenced to one month in prison after pleading guilty to driving without insurance and a separate drug offence. The 36-year-old, whose identity cannot be disclosed for legal reasons, received the sentence on February 18, 2026.
Driving Without Insurance and Prior Convictions
The court heard that the initial incident occurred on Condell Road, Limerick, on April 23, 2025, when the man was stopped at a Garda checkpoint and found to be driving without valid insurance Limerick Leader. The vehicle lacked valid tax, and was registered to the partner of the man’s daughter, who was a passenger at the time.
While the man presented an international driving license, it was deemed valid by Gardaí. However, the conviction adds to a series of prior driving offences. On September 10, 2024, at Naas District Court, he was convicted of driving without insurance. Just nine days later, Ennis District Court convicted him of driving without insurance and driving while intoxicated, resulting in a two-year disqualification.
Drug Offence and Sentencing
In a separate incident on June 17, 2025, Gardaí observed the man “acting suspiciously” in St. John’s Square, Limerick. A subsequent search revealed possession of €60 worth of drugs. He was fined €100 and given four months to pay for this offence.
Solicitor Tom Kiely, representing the accused, stated that the man had assumed he was insured due to his asylum status. He too noted that his client is currently receiving a weekly allowance of €38 from the State while his asylum application is processed and no longer has access to a vehicle.
Judge’s Remarks and Final Ruling
Judge Patricia Harney expressed dissatisfaction with the situation, stating the man was “not that innocent” and was “buying drugs from criminals.” She emphasized the connection between drug purchases and the broader drug problem. She also noted this was not the man’s “first rodeo.”
Despite a request from Mr. Kiely for a suspended sentence, Judge Harney imposed a one-month prison sentence alongside the ten-year driving disqualification, stating the man “needs to wake up” to Ireland’s road traffic laws. The conviction for failing to produce insurance was marked as taken into consideration.
Recent Dangerous Driving Case in Limerick
This case follows another recent incident in Limerick where a man, John Harty, avoided a road ban after being caught driving at 180km/h with a child passenger on September 28, 2024 Limerick Post. Harty’s charge was reduced to careless driving after completing a road safety course, but was warned of potential imprisonment if he re-offended Irish Mirror.
