Jared Goff’s Strange Day: Lions Crush Titans Despite QB Struggles
The Detroit Lions delivered a dominant 52-14 victory over the Tennessee Titans in Week 8, showcasing a powerful running game and opportunistic defense. But the performance was even more remarkable considering the struggles of star quarterback Jared Goff.
Despite a 35-14 halftime lead, Goff threw for a paltry 28 yards in the first half, completing only six of eight passes. He did manage two touchdowns, but was sacked three times for a loss of 22 yards, leaving the Lions with a mere 9 net passing yards at the break. Goff’s performance was even more unusual given that he was playing with a limp after suffering an ankle injury early in the game.
The Lions’ victory was fueled by a strong running game and opportunistic defense. Jahmyr Gibbs spearheaded the attack, rushing for 99 yards and a 70-yard touchdown in the first half alone. He finished the game with 127 yards on 11 carries. The Lions defense also forced two interceptions from Titans quarterback Mason Rudolph, converting both turnovers into touchdowns.
Goff did improve in the third quarter, finishing with 85 yards passing and three touchdowns on 12-for-15 passing. He was pulled early in the fourth quarter with the Lions comfortably ahead and his ankle injury appearing to worsen.
The Lions’ 52-point output is the fourth time in franchise history the team has scored 50 or more points, and the first since November 27, 1997. It’s a testament to the team’s depth and ability to win even when their star quarterback is struggling.
Lions were 89th team to score 35+ points in 1st half since 1991 (playoffs included). Their 133 yards of offense and 9 net passing yards were fewest of all of those teams. Pvs low was Chiefs (140 yards, 34 net yds passing) vs Rams 12/8/2002
