From Biology to the “Tatort”: The Journey of Lisa Bitter

In the upcoming Ludwigshafen “Tatort: Sashimi Spezial,” actress Lisa Bitter takes center stage as Inspector Johanna Stern. But before her successful acting career, Bitter initially pursued a different path, demonstrating a remarkable shift in professional focus.

Early Life and Diverse Interests

Born in Erlangen in 1984 and raised in Herzogenaurach, Franconia, Lisa Bitter displayed a diverse range of interests from a young age. She excelled in athletics as a competitive sport while simultaneously nurturing a passion for the stage through her school’s theater group.1

Academic Pursuits and the Call to Acting

After graduating from high school, Bitter initially enrolled in biology at Düsseldorf University. Though, she soon switched her academic focus to cultural studies and journalism at Leipzig University.2 It was in Leipzig that her path took an unexpected turn. Inspired by the acting students at the renowned “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” University of Music and Theater, she auditioned and was accepted into their program.

Training and Early Stage Work

From 2004 to 2009, Bitter completed her acting diploma, honing her skills on stage. During her training, she appeared in productions such as “The House in Montevideo” and “Wetlands” at the Neues Theater Halle (2007/2008).1

Stuttgart State Theater and Expanding Roles

Between 2009 and 2013, Bitter was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Stuttgart State Theater, where she tackled challenging roles like Ophelia in “Hamlet” and Kriemhild in “The Nibelungs.” She further expanded her experience with guest performances at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg (“Der Sturm,” 2013) and the Schauspielhaus Zürich (“Crime and Punishment,” 2014).1

Breakthrough on Television and “Tatort” Success

Bitter’s breakthrough on television came from 2009 to 2010, playing Ina Frisch in the SWR series “Laible and Frisch.”2 In 2013/2014, she joined the Ludwigshafen “Tatort” team as Johanna Stern, initially a specialist in operational case analysis alongside Ulrike Folkerts’ Lena Odenthal. Following the departure of Inspector Mario Kopper in 2018, her character evolved into the second main investigator.3

Beyond “Tatort”: Film and Television Roles

Bitter’s talent extends beyond the “Tatort” series. From 2020 to 2021, she appeared in the Amazon series “The Bei Sleeper” as Dr. Julia Kellermann. She also made her cinematic debut in 2012 with a leading role in Sönke Wortmann’s comedy “The Wedding Video” and achieved success in 2017 with “This Stupid Heart” alongside Elyas M’Barek.2 Other film credits include “Conni & Co.” (2016), “Rate your Date” (2019), and “The Goldfish” (2019).

As Lisa Bitter steps into the spotlight in “Tatort: Sashimi Spezial,” her journey from aspiring biologist to celebrated actress exemplifies a remarkable career transformation.
