Lithuania Approves Universal Military Conscription Starting in 2032
Lithuania will introduce mandatory military service for all young men starting in 2032, transitioning from its current partial draft system to a universal model designed to bolster national defense capabilities. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda confirmed the decision following a meeting of the State Defense Council.
Infrastructure Investments Drive the Implementation Timeline
The state has established a 2032 target date to allow sufficient time for crucial infrastructural investments. Mindaugas Sinkevicius explained that military officials recommended a timeline to ensure proper operational readiness, noting that the armed forces will be fully prepared by 2032. The window funds adequate housing construction for a larger influx of recruits and provides specialized training for approximately 300 new instructors.
From 2015 Partial Conscription to Universal Recruitment
Lithuania partially reinstated its military draft in 2015 following Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula in 2014, which triggered a major reassessment of national security needs. Under the current partial system, authorities randomly select more than 5,000 young men each year for nine-month service terms in the Armed Forces. The upcoming universal mandate will increase annual intake to roughly 7,500 recruits, accounting for demographic shifts and mandatory health exemptions, while women retain the option to volunteer for service.

Expanded Service Options and Reserve Readiness
The newly approved defense framework broadens the types of service available to conscripts. Recruits will have the opportunity to train as drone operators, work alongside the State Border Guard Service, or serve as firefighters and rescue personnel. Additionally, President Nausėda emphasized the necessity of balancing active conscription intakes with regular skills updates for reservists to maintain high operational standards.
