Sri Lanka Tour of Afghanistan Postponed Amidst Regional Conflict

Sri Lanka’s white-ball tour of Afghanistan, scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from March 13th to 25th, has been indefinitely postponed due to escalating tensions and conflict in West Asia. The decision comes amid concerns over flight disruptions and the broader regional instability.

Series Details and Schedule

The tour was originally slated to include three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches in Sharjah (March 13th, 15th, and 17th) followed by three One Day International (ODI) matches in Dubai (March 20th, 22nd, and 25th). This would have marked the first time Afghanistan hosted Sri Lanka for a bilateral series.

Reasons for Postponement

According to a Sri Lanka Cricket official, the postponement is primarily due to “the flight situation… and the ongoing fighting in the region.” Recent escalations in conflict, including attacks and retaliatory strikes, have led to disruptions in air travel, including temporary closures of airports in the region, such as Dubai.

Afghanistan’s Home Venue

Afghanistan has historically not hosted international cricket matches within its borders due to security concerns. Instead, matches are typically held in India or the UAE.

Impact on Other Cricket Events

The postponement of the Afghanistan-Sri Lanka series is not an isolated incident. Recent conflicts have also impacted other cricket events, including the postponement of six matches of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 in Nepal. Travel plans for teams participating in the men’s T20 World Cup have also been affected by airspace restrictions.

Future Plans

While the series is postponed indefinitely, both the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) are discussing potential alternative arrangements. However, logistical challenges make rescheduling the series elsewhere difficult. The series was set to be Afghanistan’s first under the leadership of Ibrahim Zadran, who recently took over from Rashid Khan.
