European Discovery Award
Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel’s “Armand” was recognized with the coveted European Discovery Award, celebrating a director’s excellence in their debut feature film.
The other nominees included “Hoard” (Luna Carmoon), “Kneecap” (Rich Peppiatt), “Santosh” (Sandhya Suri), “The New Year That Never Came” (Bogdan Mureșanu), and “Toxic” (Saulė Bliuvaitė).
Screenwriting Brilliance: Jacque Audiard Triumphs
Jacques Audiard garnered the European screenwriter prize for “Emilia Pérez,” outshining fellow nominees Magnus Von Horn and Line Langebek (“The Girl With the Needle”), Pedro Almodóvar (“The Room Next Door”), Mohammad Rasoulof (“The Seed of the Sacred Fig”), and Coralie Fargeat (“The Substance”).
Documentary Excellence: “No Other Land” Wins
“No Other Land,” a powerful documentary co-written and directed by Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor, Basel Adra, and Hamdan Ballal, captured the award for best documentary.
Other notable contenders includedLina Soualem’s “Bye Bye Tiberias,” Mati Diop’s “Dahomey,” Alina Maksimenko’s “In Limbo,” and Johan Grimonprez’s “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat.”
Animated Animation: “Flow” Takes the Stage
Gints Zilbalodis’s visually stunning animated feature “Flow” was crowned the best animated feature film, hovering over an impressive group of finalists including “Living Large” (Kristina Dufková), “Savages” (Claude Barras), “Sultana’s Dream” (Isabel Herguera), and “They Shot the Piano Player” (Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal).
Directorial Masterpiece: Jacques Audiard’s Repeat Victory
Adding to his earlier win, Jacques Audiard received the European director award for “Emilia Pérez.” His achievement recognized him above Andrea Arnold (“Bird”), Pedro Almodóvar (“The Room Next Door”), Mohammad Rasoulof (“The Seed of the Sacred Fig”), and Maura Delpero (“Vermiglio”).
