Liz Earle on turning back the biological clock: ‘I do feel decades younger’ Liz Earle has spoken openly about her mission to address the lack of care and attention given to midlife and older women in healthcare and wellness. The entrepreneur and wellness expert, who founded her eponymous beauty brand in 1995 before selling it in 2010, says she feels a “really strong feeling of injustice” at how women are treated as they age. Through her perform in the wellness space, Earle has found that women are “hungry for information” about their own health. She highlights that midlife and older women face dual challenges: gender discrimination in healthcare research and funding, compounded by ageism. “They’re disadvantaged in so many ways,” she says. “There’s a huge [amount of] gender discrimination that goes on for women generally in healthcare, in terms of lack of research and funding, and then when you factor in ageism on top of that.” Earle, who is 62 and splits her time between London and the West Country, believes the expertise of women like her is often dismissed. “It’s frustrating because particularly women who write about wellness, which is my job, we’re seen as a little bit of flimflam on the side,” she explains. “I’m sometimes dismissed as a mere influencer, when I’ve been writing about health and wellbeing for 40 years. I’m not a doctor, I’m not an academic, but I am a researcher, and I do talk to a lot of different doctors and academics, who work on a very high level on the global stage, and try and translate that information, bring it out of labs and ivory towers into real life.” She emphasizes the urgency of sharing knowledge, noting that it can take around 17 years for scientific discoveries to move from laboratory settings into everyday home utilize. “Because we can’t wait, we don’t have the time to wait. We don’t have the luxury. I’m in my 60s, and they say it’s around 17 years for an idea to come out of the lab and into a home environment. I haven’t got 17 years to wait.” Earle also speaks personally about finding love later in life, sharing that she met her partner just before her 60th birthday after trying digital dating. “At nearly 63 – and not just due to newfound love – I feel better than I have in my life,” she says, reflecting on how relationships can flourish with age, bringing greater wisdom, kindness, and serenity. Her message is clear: women deserve better support, research, and representation as they age, and waiting for slow-moving systems to catch up is not an option. Through her advocacy and accessible wellness guidance, Earle aims to empower women to take charge of their health and wellbeing on their own terms.
