Limerick Park Damage by Food Vendor Sparks Community Outrage

Residents of a Limerick City suburb expressed frustration after a local park was damaged by a food vendor during weekend events, according to Live95 News. The incident occurred at Greystones Park on Ennis Road, where council staff initially intervened, but further damage followed after matches on Sunday.

Councillor Shane Hickey O’Mara, who was contacted by frustrated residents, brought a motion to the council chamber regarding the situation. Speaking to Live95 News, he explained that while tensions had initially eased, the situation worsened when the vendor’s truck took a different route exiting the park, exacerbating the damage to the green space.

“It was even worse on the way out. This was after the tensions had been brought down, and everybody felt like, okay, look, there’s a one-off. But the fact that it happened on the way out-” said Councillor Hickey O’Mara, as reported by Live95 News.

He emphasized that the community does not oppose food vendors, noting their role in enhancing match-day experiences with offerings like burgers, and chips. However, residents are concerned about protecting the park, which locals use for walking dogs and children’s play.

The council has since responded, with Councillor Hickey O’Mara stating that officials have given a guarantee that food trucks will not be permitted on green spaces again and will seek alternative locations. “Luckily, the council actually got behind it today, which we really, really appreciate in the community,” he said.

The incident has drawn attention to the balance between supporting local vendors and preserving public recreational areas in Limerick City.
