Long Island Man Faces Upgraded Charges in Death of Nassau County Police Officer

Suffolk County prosecutors have filed additional charges against Matthew Smith, 20, in connection with the January 31st death of Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Espinoza. Smith is accused of driving whereas intoxicated and causing the fatal crash on Long Island.

Details of the Incident and Allegations

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, Smith was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado at speeds reaching 125 to 128 mph throughout the night. At the time of the collision, he was allegedly traveling at 70 mph when he ran a red light and struck Officer Espinoza’s Alfa Romeo.
