Lower Hutt Family Faces Ruin After Landslip Leaves Home Hanging

A Lower Hutt family is facing a devastating financial future after a large landslip rendered their home uninhabitable, potentially leaving them “with nothing,” according to homeowner Aaron Pahl.

The slip, which occurred on Monday, February 16, 2026, saw a 10 by 30 square metre expanse of the family’s backyard slide away, leaving the deck and rear foundation exposed. Pahl described hearing cracking sounds before urging his children to evacuate the house immediately. RNZ reports Pahl’s account of the event.

Years of Savings Threatened

Pahl stated that nearly 16 years of savings and hard perform are at risk. The family is currently salvaging what they can from the property while seeking advice on their options. He expressed feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about the future, stating, “I don’t see a light. I don’t realize, I honestly don’t know.”

Dangerous Building Notice and Limited Insurance Coverage

The family’s home has been issued with a dangerous building notice by the Lower Hutt City Council. Stuff confirms this. Pahl has been informed that re-stabilizing the property with retaining walls could take years. Demolishing the home, while potentially faster, would exhaust most of the insurance payout.

According to Pahl, the insurance reimbursement would cover the remaining mortgage and demolition costs, but an engineer estimated demolition could cost a couple of hundred thousand dollars, leaving little remaining. Newstalk ZB reported Pahl’s concerns about potential bankruptcy.

Displacement and Financial Strain

The family, including three children and two pets, is currently staying at Pahl’s father-in-law’s three-bedroom home in Featherston. While grateful for the accommodation, the increased commute to work and school – adding over three hours to their daily routine – is adding to the stress. The children are also adjusting to sharing a bedroom after having their own spaces at home.

Pahl, who runs a painting business called Sublime Coating Limited, has been unable to work since the slip occurred, further exacerbating the financial strain. He has started a Givealittle page to seek support from the community, acknowledging that without assistance, the family is “absolutely screwed.”

Recent Storm and Regional Impact

The landslip occurred during a period of wild weather that impacted the Wellington region, causing fallen trees and power outages, particularly in the Hutt Valley. Scoop reported on the regional impact of the storm.
