Lutheran East Secures Fourth Consecutive Ohio Division V Basketball Championship, Defeats Columbus Academy

Dayton, OH – The Cleveland Heights Lutheran East Falcons defeated the Columbus Academy Vikings 50-36 on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at the University of Dayton Arena, securing their fourth consecutive Ohio Division V state championship and seventh overall. This victory marks the first time in Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) history a team has won four consecutive state championships.

Vikings Fall Short in Rematch

This game was a rematch of the 2025 Division V state title game. Despite a valiant effort, including a late push in the fourth quarter highlighted by a dunk from senior Jason Singleton, the Vikings were unable to overcome the deficit against the powerful Falcons. Columbus Academy finished the season with a 24-5 record.

Jason Singleton’s Standout Performance

Ohio Mr. Basketball finalist Jason Singleton led the Vikings with 17 points, shooting 7-for-14 from the floor, and added six rebounds. Singleton, a Harvard commit and a two-time District 10 Player of the Year, finished his career with over 1,300 points. He averaged 21 points per game and shot 51 percent from the floor throughout his career.

Lutheran East Dominance

Lutheran East’s success is built on a strong program, boasting a 25-2 record this season. They defeated Division IV state runner-up Cleveland Glenville and other state powers like Westerville North. Devontey Perkins led the Falcons with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Dylan Ziegler contributed 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Coach Warstler Reflects on the Season

Columbus Academy coach Jeff Warstler praised Singleton’s leadership, stating, “Jason’s a superstar, not just on the basketball court, but with his leadership, it’s simple for guys to want to step in and follow him.” Warstler also emphasized the importance of attention to detail within the program, noting a recent instance where he reminded a new player to put his shoes back on before entering the locker room, highlighting the team’s focus on the “little things.”

End of an Era for Columbus Academy Assistant Coach

The game also marked the final game of John Exline’s 58-year career at Columbus Academy, with 54 years spent as an assistant coach.

Looking Ahead

While the Vikings will be losing key players, including Singleton, coach Warstler remains optimistic about the program’s future, emphasizing the team’s commitment to its culture and continuous improvement. Lutheran East will aim to continue its historic run next season.
