Apple’s 2026 Mac Studio: M5 Chips, Customizable Configurations, and Potential Display Updates

Originally launched in 2022, the Mac Studio has received updates, but the 2026 iteration promises to be its most significant leap forward. The current Mac Studio was updated in March 2025, and Apple historically refreshes this machine in the spring or early summer.

M5 Mac Studio Release Window

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to release M5 Max and M5 Ultra versions of the Mac Studio in 2026. Based on past release patterns, a window between March and June is most likely. Two of the three Mac Studio launches since 2022 occurred in March, with another in June during WWDC [1]. Gurman also reported that the upgraded Mac Studio desktops shouldn’t arrive too long after the spring Mac refresh, suggesting it won’t debut alongside earlier announcements [3].

M5 Max and M5 Ultra: Performance Expectations

The 2025 Mac Studio’s combination of an M4 Max with an M3 Ultra was unusual. The 2026 Mac Studio is expected to feature both M5 Max and M5 Ultra options, with the M5 Ultra delivering a substantial performance increase over the M3 Ultra in both CPU and GPU capabilities [1].

Redesigned Chip Architecture for Greater Customization

A key structural change is coming to the M5 Pro and M5 Max, with Apple redesigning how these chips are built by placing the CPU and GPU on separate blocks [1]. This will provide buyers with greater flexibility to customize their configurations, such as pairing a base-tier CPU with a maxed-out GPU, or vice versa – a long-requested feature from creative professionals and power users.

Memory and Storage Specifications

Expect the M5 Max to start with 36GB of unified RAM, and the M5 Ultra with 96GB. Storage options are anticipated to reach up to 8TB or 16TB. Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, already present in the current model, is expected to carry over.

Port Selection

Port selection is expected to remain consistent with the current model, including:

  • Front USB-C or Thunderbolt ports (depending on model)
  • SD card slot
  • Rear Thunderbolt 5 ports
  • USB-A ports
  • HDMI
  • 10Gb Ethernet
  • 3.5mm headphone jack

Potential Studio Display 2 Launch

Alongside the fresh Mac Studio, Apple may launch a Studio Display 2. This potential update could feature a 120Hz ProMotion display and HDR support [4]. The high-end model is expected to have enhanced features, including a more robust speaker system and a more comprehensive selection of ports.

Pricing Considerations

Current models start at $1,999 for the Max and $3,999 for the Ultra. New US tariffs on overseas components could potentially increase these prices when the M5 models are released.

Mac Pro Development on Hold

Apple has reportedly put development of a revamped Mac Pro “on the back burner,” with the focus now on the Mac Studio [3].
