macOS Tahoe 26.4 Now Available: Safari Updates, Battery Health, and More
Apple has officially released macOS Tahoe 26.4, the fourth major update to the macOS Tahoe operating system. The update, released on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, brings several improvements focused on performance, security, and user experience. It follows the release of macOS Tahoe 26.3 in February 2025, and subsequent minor updates addressing compatibility with Studio Displays and the MacBook Neo.
What’s New in macOS Tahoe 26.4?
- Safari Compact Tab Bar: macOS Tahoe 26.4 restores the compact tab bar option to Safari, offering a slimmer tab design for improved screen space. This feature was previously available in macOS Sequoia and iPadOS 18. MacRumors
- Battery Charge Limit: A new feature allows users to limit the maximum charge level for their MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and MacBook Neo batteries, ranging from 80% to 100% in 5% increments. This aims to reduce battery wear and extend lifespan, mirroring a feature already available on iPhones. Cult of Mac
- New Emoji: The update introduces eight new emoji characters, aligning with releases on iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4. These include Distorted Face, Orca, Trombone, Landslide, Hairy Creature, Treasure Chest, Fight Cloud, and Ballet Dancer. Cult of Mac
- Rosetta 2 Warning: macOS Tahoe 26.4 displays warnings for applications still relying on Rosetta 2, Apple’s translation layer for Intel-based apps on Apple Silicon Macs. This alerts users that these apps will no longer be supported starting with macOS 28. MacRumors
- Freeform and Family Sharing Updates: The update includes Apple Creator Studio for the Freeform app and a Family Sharing change allowing adult family members to use their own payment methods for purchases. MacRumors
- MacBook Neo Wallpapers: Users can now access the colorful wallpapers previously exclusive to the MacBook Neo. MacObserver
Under the Hood Improvements
As with all macOS updates, Tahoe 26.4 includes unspecified performance improvements and security patches. Apple routinely addresses vulnerabilities and optimizes system performance with each release.
What About Siri?
Despite ongoing rumors of a revamped Siri, the improved voice assistant did not debut with macOS Tahoe 26.4. Apple has indicated that an updated Siri is expected later in 2026, potentially coinciding with the announcement of iOS 27 at WWDC 2026. MacObserver
Should You Upgrade?
Whereas not a revolutionary update, macOS Tahoe 26.4 offers several worthwhile improvements, particularly for users concerned about battery health or those who prefer the compact tab bar in Safari. As always, it’s recommended to allow a few days after a major release before updating to allow Apple to address any initial bugs or compatibility issues. MacObserver
