A playground at Richmond Elementary School could soon receive a new look to honor the memory of a fallen area athlete.

The Maddie Potts Foundation, founded in honor of the late Chariho soccer player who passed away on the field back in 2017, aims to raise money to rebuild the school playground.

According to the foundation, the fundraiser is taking place in honor of what would have been Maddie’s 25th birthday.

“She loved her school. she loved this community,” said Melissa DeJoseph, the Treasurer of the Maddie Potts Foundation. “She loved helping anybody and I really think she would be proud of this project.”

The playground at Richmond Elementary School was condemned due to safety concerns.

“We lost it and we want a new one that has stuff that we can do,” said Joanna DeJoseph, a local elementary school student.

Richmond Elementary School is set to take in 100 additional students as a result of Hope Valley Elementary School closing.

“We need a sizable structure to support all of the kids coming to school here,” said Thea Brennan, the PTO President at Richmond Elementary School.

Initial estimates to reconstruct the playground, according to the foundation, would cost $200,000.

Even though the PTO isn’t able to directly fundraise for the playground project, Brennan is grateful the Maddie Potts Foundation is stepping up.

“This is really a community playground, and I want to make sure our community has that,” Brennan said, referring to different community groups like the YMCA who used the playground.
