Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ Faces Last-Minute Hurdles Ahead of Release

Actor Vijay’s final film, Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth, is facing a tense wait for certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) just days before its scheduled release on january 9th. The film’s producers, KVN Productions, have sought intervention from the Madras High Court to expedite the process [[2]].

High Court hearing and CBFC Response

The Madras high Court is currently hearing the plea filed by KVN Productions,requesting a directive for the CBFC to issue a censor certificate.Justice PT Asha has requested the CBFC to submit the complaint that led to the film being referred to a revising committee by tomorrow, January 8th, and scheduled a further hearing for Wednesday, January 7th [[2]], [[3]].

During the hearing, the court questioned the urgency of releasing the film as planned, suggesting a possible postponement.However, the court also directed that the details of the complainant be disclosed once the censorship process is complete [[2]].

Timeline of CBFC Certification

According to reports, the CBFC’s examining committee initially recommended a ‘UA 16+’ certification for Jana nayagan after the producers addressed a list of suggested cuts and modifications. these modifications were related to depictions of violence, fight sequences, and perhaps sensitive religious references [[2]].

The producers submitted the film for certification on December 18, 2025, and received the UA 16+ recommendation on December 22, 2025. After resubmitting a revised version on December 24, 2025, they were again informed of the UA 16+ certification on December 29, 2025. Though, on January 5, 2026, the producers received notification that the film was being referred to the revising committee under rule 24 of the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules [[2]].

Political Context

The delay in certification has also drawn political attention, with members of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the political party founded by Vijay, publicly expressing their dissatisfaction [[1]]. Additionally, Vijay has been summoned by the CBI to appear in New Delhi on January 12th in connection with a separate matter – the 2024 Karur stampede that resulted in 41 deaths [[1]].

As of January 7, 2026, the fate of Jana Nayagan’s release remains uncertain, pending the outcome of the High Court hearing and the CBFC’s decision.
