Mahomes and Kelce Face Trademark Lawsuit Over 1587 Prime Restaurant

Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, along with their restaurant partners, are being sued for trademark infringement by 1587 Sneakers. The lawsuit centers on the use of “1587” as the name of their steakhouse, 1587 Prime, in Kansas City.

The Lawsuit Details

1587 Sneakers alleges that the restaurant’s name infringes upon their prior use of the number combination. According to court records, the sneaker company claims it began selling shoes under the 1587 Sneakers brand on April 13, 2023 ESPN. However, 1587 Sneakers did not apply for the “1587” trademark until October 2025 NBC Sports.

Mahomes and Kelce, along with their business partner Noble 33, opened 1587 Prime last year, combining their jersey numbers for the restaurant’s name. The steakhouse filed its own trademark application for “1587 Prime” in December 2023 ESPN.

Different Industries, Different Trademarks?

The legal dispute hinges on the fact that the two companies have sought trademark protection in different categories. 1587 Prime’s trademark application is for the bar and restaurant industry, while 1587 Sneakers is pursuing a trademark in the clothing category ESPN. However, 1587 Prime also sells clothing, which complicates the matter.

Trademark attorney Josh Gerben of Gerben IP suggests that the case is challenging for the sneaker company, noting that trademarks can often coexist in different industries ESPN.

Consumer Confusion

1587 Sneakers alleges that consumers have contacted the company believing it is affiliated with 1587 Prime Reddit. The lawsuit claims “scores of consumers” have made this mistaken assumption.

The lawsuit may inadvertently benefit 1587 Sneakers by raising its profile, as many people were previously unaware of the brand NBC Sports.
