Houston drivers face major weekend freeway closures across major loops and highways
Drivers in the Houston area face significant traffic disruptions this weekend due to extensive freeway closures and lane restrictions on several of the city's busiest roadways, Click2Houston reported. According to Houston TranStar’s weekend construction schedule, infrastructure work spans the 610 South Loop, Interstate 10, and Interstate 69 from Saturday, October 24, through Monday, October 26. While some restrictions remain in place throughout the entire weekend, others are strictly limited to overnight hours.
South Loop and East Freeway connector ramps close
Motorists traveling westbound on the 610 South Loop encounter a complete closure between Broadway Street and Telephone Road. This shutdown began Friday, Oct. 23, at 9 p.m. and lasts until Saturday, Oct. 24, at 4 p.m. Drivers must exit at Broadway Street, continue along the frontage road, and use the next entrance ramp to reenter the freeway. The northbound connector ramp from the 610 South Loop to the I-45 Gulf Freeway shuts down nightly from 9 p.m. to noon through Sunday, Oct. 25.
Along the East Freeway, several vital connector ramps are offline. The eastbound connector from I-10 to the I-610 North Loop remains completely closed until early Monday morning, Oct. 26, at 5 a.m. Houston TranStar advises motorists to continue eastbound on I-10, take Beltway 8 North, and connect to US-90 West to reach I-610.
Sugar Land overnight bridge repairs and Katy Freeway lane cuts
Farther south in Sugar Land, drivers heading northbound on I-69 face overnight lane closures between University Boulevard and Sweetwater Boulevard. This restriction runs nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Monday morning as crews execute scheduled bridge repair work in Fort Bend County. Detours require motorists to exit at University Boulevard and reenter near Sweetwater Boulevard.
Meanwhile, downtown Houston commuters continue to deal with long-term construction on the Katy Freeway. Two outside westbound lanes remain blocked between I-45/Hogan Street and Studemont Street to accommodate the White Oak Bayou elevation project and the Studemont Street bridge demolition. Alternating lane and ramp restrictions also persist in both directions between Heights Boulevard and I-45.
Checking real-time Houston traffic conditions
Houston TranStar reminds motorists that all scheduled construction and lane closures remain subject to change depending on weather conditions or unexpected emergencies. Drivers are encouraged to build extra time into their commutes and verify current conditions before heading out by visiting the Houston TranStar construction schedule and live traffic map.
