Malaysia Investigates Alleged Plot to Destabilize Government Linked to Daim Family
Kuala Lumpur – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has publicly accused a prominent family of orchestrating a plot to topple his government, alleging a concerted effort to undermine national stability. The accusations, revealed on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, center around a campaign involving media manipulation, political lobbying, and potential international involvement.
Allegations and Investigation
According to Prime Minister Anwar, the alleged scheme involved influencing public opinion through newspaper editors and journalists, commissioning legal analyses to challenge government policies, and attempting to sway parliamentary questions. The plan reportedly included enlisting international bankers to question the Prime Minister’s motives and economic policies.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is currently investigating the matter and has sought public aid in locating four children of the late Tun Daim Zainuddin as part of an ongoing asset declaration investigation .
Bloomberg’s Role
Anwar stated that a strategic document outlining the alleged plan specifically mentioned briefing Bloomberg for further action. This followed a series of reports published by the news outlet in February 2025, focusing on allegations against MACC chief Azam Baki. On February 10, 2025, Bloomberg reported on a shareholding held by Azam in Velocity Capital Bhd, exceeding government guidelines for public servants . The following day, Bloomberg reported alleged collusion between the MACC and a group of businessmen, dubbed the “corporate mafia,” citing internal documents and witness interviews.
Bloomberg has been contacted for comment.
Asset Freezes
The MACC has secured court orders to freeze assets linked to Toh Puan Na’imah Abdul Khalid, the widow of the late Tun Daim Zainuddin, and her family. Approximately RM758 million (US$173 million) worth of assets in the United Kingdom have been frozen . A separate order was obtained to freeze additional assets in London worth RM759 million also linked to Na’imah. She is currently challenging the London asset freeze order.
Previously, Daim Zainuddin was charged with failing to declare his assets in January 2024, but the charges were dropped following his death on November 13, 2024. Prosecutors have indicated they will proceed with the case against Na’imah.
Government Response and Concerns
Based on investigations, Anwar said companies, organizations, and individuals involved in the alleged plot had met six times in 2025, both in Malaysia and abroad. The government views this seriously, as the involvement of international bankers suggests an effort to disrupt Malaysia’s economic strength.
Anwar expressed hope that opposition members would not support such initiatives, even if they stood to benefit, and reiterated his acceptance of legitimate criticism. He emphasized that the alleged plot was not merely criticism of the prime minister but an attempt to sabotage the government and the country. He stressed the need for preparedness and vigilance, transcending party or factional interests.
Zionist Group Allegations
Anwar also hinted at the involvement of individuals in “notable” Zionist groups, questioning if Arau MP Shahidan would continue supporting these people once their background came to light.
