Malaysia has expressed its gratitude to the ASEAN Plus Three (APT) for their unwavering commitment to bolstering regional food security. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup conveyed this appreciation during the 24th ASEAN Meeting of Agriculture and Forestry Ministers (Amaf) Plus Three, held virtually on October 25.
Strengthening Regional Food Security
Datuk Arthur highlighted Malaysia’s emphasis on fostering strong ties within the ASEAN community, particularly concerning food security and emergency aid during crises. He emphasized Malaysia’s dedication to supporting the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) in its mission to strengthen regional food security.
The meeting acknowledged APTERR’s significant contribution of 11,620 metric tonnes of rice this year. It also reviewed the progress of the 2016-2025 ASEAN Plus Three Cooperation Strategy (APTCS), which prioritizes sustainable agricultural practices.
APTCS initiatives include reducing reliance on harmful chemical pesticides, enhancing cross-border disease control, and improving water and forest management efficiency.
A Platform for Collaboration
Datuk Arthur underscored the importance of the 24th Amaf as a platform for strengthening ASEAN’s collaboration with APT countries in agriculture and forestry. These efforts aim to enhance food production efficiency, strengthen supply chains, and develop regional expertise.
However, Malaysia clarified that its participation in the meeting should not be construed as recognition of Myanmar’s military regime as the legitimate government.
The 24th Amaf brought together ten ASEAN member countries, along with APT members China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea. Timor-Leste participated as an observer.
