Malmö FF Sports Director Dismisses Criticism Amidst Disappointing Season
Malmö FF’s men’s team has considerably underperformed this season, currently sitting in sixth place in the Allsvenskan with two rounds remaining, effectively ending their hopes for direct European qualification.
“It is a disaster,” Daniel Andersson, the club’s sports director, summarized the situation. While a fourth-place finish – and potential European qualification dependent on the Swedish Cup results – remains a possibility, Saturday’s away match against Häcken presents a significant challenge with a lengthy absentee list due to illness (Oliver Berg), injuries (Lasse Berg Johnsen, Arnor Sigurdsson, Anders Christiansen), and suspension (Pontus Jansson).
“we are fighting and hanging on. It is indeed a arduous situation. Always when it’s tough, you also lose players. There are fewer and fewer of them. It’s always the same when it’s like this. But we will play two good games the last time in the Allsvenskan and try to get results in Europe as well,” Andersson stated. He acknowledged a pattern of injuries coinciding with poor performance, adding, “Yes, but that’s always the case when things go wrong. A few players disappear here and there. We will get a good team anyway.”
Despite the disappointing season and ongoing searches for a new CEO and coach,Andersson remains optimistic about the future.”We have our strategy and will bounce back, there is no doubt about that. We know what we did wrong and we will correct it by next year. We will be counted on next year. It is vital to finish the season as well as possible and we will do that.”
Andersson confirmed he has identified the root causes of the team’s struggles, stating,”I know what we have done wrong. We will make a bigger evaluation when you sum up the whole season, but I know very well what we have done wrong. Then there is the board and othre management who have to agree.”
He pointed to player availability as a key factor. “It is indeed quite obvious that you need to have good players available to perform. Looking over the year, our best players have not been available enough. It’s a mistake we’ve made. Then there are many pieces in it. Is it the right type of play…”.
when asked about the intense criticism surrounding the team’s performance, Andersson was dismissive. “I couldn’t care less actually,” he said.
Malmö FF Sporting Director Daniel Andersson Dismisses Criticism Amidst Club Struggles
Daniel Andersson, Sporting Director of Malmö FF, has downplayed concerns surrounding the club’s recent poor form and dismissed criticism from the media and pundits, while emphasizing the importance of supporter opinion. The statements came as Malmö FF faces pressure to improve their standing in the league, with a fourth-place finish seen as crucial for European qualification.
Andersson acknowledged the team is under pressure but stated, “This is nothing. This is calm. I don’t think it’s anything special.” He further asserted he isn’t overly concerned with external criticism, stating, “I don’t care that much about that. I don’t think it’s that windy actually. It’s quite calm for me. I only care about how Malmö FF is doing, everything else is irrelevant.”
When directly asked about opinions from the media, andersson was dismissive, saying, “You have no idea. You have zero idea so I don’t really care one bit.” He extended this sentiment to specific commentators, including those critical of player Gusten Dahlin, stating, “Even less. And all these with Gusten Dahlin and these… I couldn’t care less actually.”
However, Andersson stressed the importance of the club’s supporters. “I care a lot about them. It is our soul,” he said.
Regarding the team’s performance, Andersson highlighted the importance of securing a fourth-place finish. “That’s clear. We try to aim as high as we can and charge. A fourth place makes a big difference, then you have an chance to reach europe.”
He also addressed concerns about the team’s character, acknowledging that challenging times reveal true qualities. “Often the best and most experienced players are the ones who have built up a little more experience and character. It is easy when everything is going well but it is in these times that people are tested. Then you also see what kind of characters it is. There are perhaps some who have not stood up likewise perhaps, but it is not always so easy either for a young player or for a new player who comes to a new environment and then there is talk of a crisis. These are tough situations and we are talking about people.”
