Coalisland Tragedy: Man Dies after car Crashes into Shop in County Tyrone

A 71-year-old man has died following a collision in Coalisland, County Tyrone, on Wednesday, January 28th. Gerard “Jock” Rafferty, a local resident, succumbed to his injuries after a car crashed into a shop on Moor Road.

According to a statement released by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), officers responded to reports of the incident at approximately 12:20 PM. The vehicle struck both the building and a pedestrian, later identified as Mr. Rafferty.

Emergency services, including the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, were immediately dispatched to the scene. Despite swift medical attention, Mr. Rafferty was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to the hospital.

Chief Inspector Simpson from the PSNI’s collision investigation unit stated that inquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. Moor Road remains closed between Washingbay Road and Gortgonis Road as investigations continue, causing disruption for local commuters.

“We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have dashcam or other digital footage that could assist with our investigation, to come forward,” Chief Inspector Simpson said. Anyone with information is urged to contact the collision investigation unit on 101, quoting reference number 651 of January 28th.

The local community has expressed shock and sadness following the news of Mr. Rafferty’s death. Further updates will be provided as the police investigation progresses.
