Fatal Fall at Braniel Estate Bonfire
A man in his 40s has died after falling from a bonfire in the Braniel Estate in east Belfast. The tragedy triggered a formal investigation by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI).
Emergency Crews Respond to Farmhurst Green
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) received a 999 call at 10:14 p.m. reporting the incident at Farmhurst Green. A single emergency crew arrived on-site to provide initial treatment before taking the man to the Royal Victoria Hospital. Despite medical intervention, the PSNI confirmed the man died in hospital following a fall at the site of a bonfire in east Belfast, with police receiving a report of the death at 4:40 p.m. the following day.
Organizers Push Ahead With Lighting
The bonfire site is managed by a coalition of local groups, including bonfire builders, a local flute band, and a community organization. Following the man’s death, these groups issued a joint statement on social media characterizing the event as an “accident.”
After consulting with the man’s family, organizers decided to proceed with the scheduled lighting of the bonfire later that evening. “As a community, we are heartbroken by this tragic loss and ask that everyone keeps his loved ones in their prayers in the days and weeks ahead,” the statement read.
Minute of Silence Observed
To honor the deceased, organizers requested that attendees observe a minute of silence before the bonfire is lit. They further urged the crowd to disperse quietly and respectfully once the bonfire has been lit.
Regulatory Scrutiny of Large-Scale Displays
The investigation into the specific factors that led to the fall continues. At this time, the PSNI has released no further details regarding the identity of the deceased or the technical findings of the investigation.
