Mango Launcher Brings Deep Customization to Android Home Screens

In a column for Android Police, reviewer Manuel Vonau argues that Mango Launcher offers third-party Android customization options that surpass typical minimalist alternatives. Vonau writes that he tested the application as a replacement for Samsung’s One UI Home launcher, seeking a fresh home screen layout without sacrificing core productivity features. While standard minimalist launchers rely on stripped-down, text-only interfaces, Mango Launcher blends a basic aesthetic with deep layout controls, app shortcuts, and icon adjustments.

Interface Setup and Minimalist Design Choices

The launcher provides an initial onboarding tour that introduces gesture controls and theme selections while allowing users to designate favorite home screen applications, according to Android Police. Vonau reports that the interface resembles Olauncher but features a more intuitive layout. Users can add text shortcuts directly to the home screen or onto individual app icons, maintaining a traditional icon grid rather than forcing a text-only setup.

During initial configuration, users can enable the Mango Button at the bottom of the home screen to launch custom shortcuts. Vonau notes that he programmed a single tap to expand device notifications and a long press to access quick settings. Pressing and holding an app icon reveals settings to change its color, rename it, or hide it from the app drawer entirely. Swiping sideways across an icon uncovers direct app actions, such as composing an email inside Gmail.

App Drawer Organization and Search Functions

Vonau highlights the built-in search icon as a faster alternative, which opens applications instantly as the user types part of the name without requiring an enter keystroke. The top of the drawer automatically sorts applications into seven distinct categories, including navigation and productivity. Users who prefer a cleaner view can disable these categories by going to Mango Settings, selecting Drawer, and toggling off category display.

Paid Tier Restrictions and Performance Limitations

Mango Launcher provides an ad-free experience on its free tier and permits basic functions like hiding apps without requiring a payment, Android Police notes. However, Vonau points out that several advanced features remain locked behind a paywall. These restricted options include widget pages, home screen notification replies, and a scribble function designed to open apps via handwriting. Accessing these Pro features requires either a subscription fee of $7 per year or a one-time lifetime license costing $25. Vonau also observes minor speed lags and animation stutter on midrange hardware when multiple background transitions occur in rapid succession.

Pricing details for the paid tier

How much does the Pro version of Mango Launcher cost?

Upgrading to the paid tier requires a subscription fee of $7 per year or a one-time lifetime license payment of $25.

What features are included in the free tier?

The free version is entirely ad-free, includes app hiding capabilities, and provides core customization tools for layouts, icons, and gestures without requiring payment.

Can users organize apps automatically inside the drawer?

Yes, the app drawer automatically sorts programs into seven categories at the top of the screen, though users can disable this feature in the settings menu.
