For months,Indonesian movie audiences have been talking about one film: Norma, the story of a seemingly blissful marriage shattered by a shocking secret – an affair between the wife and her own mother.

The film, released in March, has sparked widespread debate about family values, morality, and the boundaries of acceptable storytelling. It’s become a cultural phenomenon, dominating social media and drawing record crowds to cinemas.

norma is based on a viral Twitter thread posted in 2022 by a user named Norma Risma. She recounted discovering her husband’s affair, not with another woman, but with her mother, after finding explicit messages on his phone. the story quickly went viral, igniting a firestorm of online discussion.

The film adaptation, directed by Priya Iskandar, closely follows the original story. It portrays the emotional turmoil of norma as she grapples with the betrayal of both her husband and her mother. While some viewers have praised the film for its raw and honest portrayal of a taboo subject, others have criticised it for being exploitative and sensationalist.

“It’s a very bold film that dares to tackle a sensitive issue,” says film critic Joko Anwar. “It’s not an easy watch, but it’s a conversation starter.”

However, the film has also faced backlash from conservative groups who argue that it violates Indonesian cultural norms and promotes immoral behaviour. Some have called for it to be banned, while others have organised protests against its screening.

Despite the controversy,Norma has become a box office success, attracting over 7.7 million viewers as of May. It has also generated notable revenue for the Indonesian film industry, proving that audiences are willing to embrace challenging and unconventional stories.

The film’s success has also raised questions about the ethics of adapting viral stories for the big screen. Some argue that it trivialises real-life trauma, while others believe that it can be a powerful way to raise awareness about important social issues.

Regardless of one’s opinion, norma has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on Indonesian cinema and society. It has sparked a national conversation about family, betrayal, and the complexities of human relationships, and it’s a film that will likely be discussed and debated for years to come.

Indonesia is gripped by a scandalous new film based on a viral TikTok story

A new Indonesian film based on a real-life adultery scandal is drawing huge crowds, tapping into a surprising appetite for stories of marital betrayal in the conservative nation.

The film,Infidelity,is based on the story of Norma,a young woman who discovered her husband having an affair with her own mother. The story first went viral on TikTok, sparking outrage and a flurry of online commentary.

Such themes are highly taboo in Indonesia, where adultery is punishable with jail time. The country’s new criminal code, set to take effect nationwide next year, outlaws sex outside marriage – and in its most conservative province, couples are already publicly flogged for premarital sex.

but in this culture of religious conservatism, experts say, a voyeuristic interest in household scandals thrives.

With the help of social media, stories that had mostly been limited to neighbourhood gossip now make for viral “pelakor” content, a slang term for homewrecker and an oft-used keyword in videos of wives confronting their husbands’ mistresses.

“With films about these scandals, people are given a space to peek into someone else’s household problems,” SM Gietty Tambunan, a member of the Jakarta Arts Council Film Committee, tells BBC Indonesian.

“Especially because of that conservative culture, people are becoming even more curious.”

A taste for scandal

vero, a 42-year-old housewife in Jakarta, has been following Norma’s story as it went viral on TikTok. It made her “furious with the husband and mother”, she tells BBC Indonesian.

“When I knew this story was being made into a movie, I wanted to see how cruel these two people were to Norma,” she says.

In the cinema she cried at the movie’s climax, when Norma weaved through a crowd outside her house to find her half-dressed husband and mother in the room.
