Denny Hamlin Defies Father Time, Earns Praise from NASCAR Legend Mark Martin

Denny Hamlin’s continued success in NASCAR at age 45 has impressed fellow driver and NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin, who recognizes the challenges of competing at a high level as age increases. Martin, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017, sees parallels between Hamlin’s career trajectory and that of Darrell Waltrip, noting a shift in public perception of Hamlin over time.

A Shift in Perception and Continued Success

Martin observed that Hamlin has undergone a “baby face turn,” evolving from a driver often viewed as a “heel” to a more widely appreciated figure, similar to what he witnessed with Darrell Waltrip in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Despite his age, Hamlin continues to win races, a feat Martin acknowledges is increasingly rare. “It’s pretty damn cool,” Martin stated. “When he said after the race that he’s working hard, I believe it since I think it’s harder now to win at 50 than it was when I did it and it was hard then.”

The Challenges of Aging in Motorsports

Martin, who continued to win Cup races through his 50th birthday in 2009, understands the physical and mental demands of maintaining peak performance. He emphasized that although speed can be maintained, “race craft” – the ability to strategically navigate a race – can diminish with age. He likened the situation to outdated technology, stating, “I’ve got a 15-year-old iPad and it was fast when I got it but now it’s so slow that it’s unusable…That same thing happens to your processor.”

Maintaining the Drive to Win

Martin highlighted the importance of fitness and maintaining a strong desire to win. He recounted his own decision to join Rick Hendrick’s team, driven by a desire to experience the euphoria of winning one more time. He believes Hamlin possesses these qualities, noting Hamlin’s ability to remain competitive. “The way Denny looks, he could go another five years, and I know he probably won’t but it’s just harder now,” Martin said. He also pointed to Kevin Harvick as an example of a driver facing similar challenges as he ages.

Hamlin’s Legacy and Current Standing

As of March 18, 2026, Denny Hamlin has 61 Cup Series wins, placing him 10th on the all-time list. He is only two wins behind Kyle Busch, the only other active driver in the top 10. Hamlin’s recent success, including a win at Las Vegas, demonstrates his continued ability to compete at the highest level.

Hamlin’s Relationship with Darrell Waltrip

Hamlin has previously discussed a strained dynamic with Darrell Waltrip, expressing a feeling of being underappreciated for his accomplishments in the #11 car. This perceived lack of recognition from Waltrip, a former #11 driver, fueled Hamlin’s desire to prove himself and contribute to the car’s storied history.
