Marner’s Overtime Goal Sends Canada to Olympic Semifinals
Milan, Italy – Mitch Marner scored a dramatic overtime goal on Wednesday, lifting Canada to a 4-3 victory over Czechia in the quarterfinal round of the Olympic men’s hockey tournament. The goal, coming at 1:22 of the extra period, secured Canada’s place in the semifinals against Finland.
A Late Rally and a Moment of Brilliance
Canada faced a tense finish after falling behind late in the third period. Ondrej Palat gave Czechia a 3-2 lead with 7:42 remaining, but Nick Suzuki tied the game with a deflection goal at 3:27, setting the stage for Marner’s heroics. Canada had lost captain Sidney Crosby to an injury earlier in the game, adding to the drama.
Marner’s Decisive Play
The winning play began with a drop pass from Macklin Celebrini. Marner, skating into the Czech zone, found himself surrounded by three defenders. A momentary hesitation from Czech defenseman Radim Simek created a seam, allowing Marner to accelerate and unleash a backhand shot over the shoulder of Lukas Dostal and under the crossbar.
“Just tried to observe what my options were when I got over the blueline,” Marner said after the game. “I saw Mack kind of on my right side, was looking to produce a play to him… then just kind of saw a hole and a gap.”
Key Performances and Team Effort
Jordan Binnington was crucial in net for Canada, making 21 saves, including a key stop on David Pastrnak during a breakaway with 70 seconds left in regulation. Nathan MacKinnon likewise scored for Canada, leveling the score at 2-2 in the second period. Celebrini also contributed with the primary assist on Marner’s winning goal.
Cooper Praises Marner’s Clutch Ability
Head coach Jon Cooper lauded Marner’s ability to deliver in crucial moments. “There’s just never a doubt in my mind about throwing that kid over the boards, because he doesn’t disappoint,” Cooper said. “Sometimes your hair falls out at times, but he never disappoints.” Marner himself called it the biggest goal of his life.
Looking Ahead
Canada will now face Finland in the Olympic semifinals on Friday. Finland advanced after a 3-2 overtime win against Switzerland. The Canadian team will look to continue their momentum as they pursue a gold medal.
