Ducati Leans Towards 2024 Engine for MotoGP 2025

Ducati might stick with its 2024 engine for the upcoming MotoGP 2025 season, according to Team Manager Ducati Lenovo, Davide Tardozzi. Tardozzi revealed this possibility during an appearance on the MotoGP channel’s “After The Flag” program.

“So far the decision has not been made, but it truly seems like we tend to 2024,” Tardozzi stated.

The final decision will be made by Luigi Dall’Igna, Ducati Corse’s Director, and the engineers, considering the valuable feedback gathered during the preseason tests at Sepang. Dall’Igna has emphasized the significance of these tests in determining the engine to be used for the entire season, including 2026. Marc Marquez, another key Ducati rider, echoed this sentiment, focusing on the machine’s development during the Sepang tests.

Cautious Approach Due to 2026 Engine Freeze

Tardozzi explained that Ducati is exercising caution due to the impending freeze on engine development in 2026. This means that any significant changes made to the engine now could impact their competitiveness in the following seasons.

“Yes, as I have said, we will make this decision as we have to freeze (develop the engine) for two years, and we do not want to take risks in the next two years,” Tardozzi commented.

The team is thus leaning towards the 2024 engine, which has already shown promising results in initial tests.

Considerations for Teams and Riders

This decision highlights the strategic complexities faced by MotoGP teams. While pushing for technological advancements is crucial, it must be balanced with long-term considerations and potential risks.

For riders like Marc Marquez, consistency and reliability become paramount, as the chosen machine will carry them through not just the 2025 season, but also into 2026.

Ducati’s final decision will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the competitive landscape of MotoGP in 2025 and beyond.
