Mary Fowler Returns Stronger for Matildas’ Asian Cup Campaign

Perth, Australia – February 27, 2026 – Matildas star Mary Fowler is back in contention for Australia, demonstrating resilience and renewed confidence as the team prepares for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. After a nine-and-a-half-month absence due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, Fowler is eager to make a significant impact.

Overcoming Injury and Regaining Form

Fowler tore her ACL while playing for Manchester City in April of last year, raising concerns about her participation in the home tournament. However, she made her return to the pitch as a 75th-minute substitute in a 5-1 FA Cup win over Chelsea in early February . Following a brief period of recovery after experiencing some minor setbacks, she secured a start last weekend, gaining valuable match experience.

“After getting my first minutes against Chelsea, I then had a few little bumps along the road, so I missed a couple of games,” Fowler said. “But then on the weekend I got to get my first start. So that was really good for the confidence and really good to just see how the body feels during a game, but likewise pulling up afterwards.”

Australian Heat Aids Recovery

Fowler believes the warmer Australian climate is aiding her recovery, specifically helping to alleviate stiffness in her knees. “I feel good being here. And I think the heat’s really going to help since half the issue’s my knees being frozen. So just excited to be out there.”

Key Player for the Matildas

The 20-year-old forward, who has scored 16 goals in 63 appearances for the Matildas, is expected to play a crucial role in Australia’s attempt to win the Women’s Asian Cup for the first time since 2010. The Matildas begin their campaign against the Philippines at Optus Stadium on Sunday, March 1st.

Time Away Fostered Growth

Fowler has expressed that her time on the sidelines allowed for personal reflection and growth. She returns to the team feeling stronger and more prepared, both physically and mentally.
