Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald Corrects Dáil Record on Teenager Texts

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has issued a correction to the Dáil regarding the age of the young person who received inappropriate texts from former senator Niall Ó Donnghaile. She also apologized for earlier statements she made that caused hurt and acknowledged the former senator’s behavior was unacceptable.

Correction and Apology

In a statement to the Dáil, Ms. McDonald clarified that the young person was 16 years old, not 17 as previously stated. This correction stemmed from inaccurate information on the young person’s application form to Ógra Shinn Féin. Ms. McDonald expressed her regret for the misinformation and apologized directly to the young person and their mother.

“The information which I placed on the Dáil record last week relating to an incident where a Sinn Féin representative sent inappropriate text messages to a young person… It was then my understanding that the young person was 17 years of age because of the information provided on his application form when he applied to join Ógra Shinn Féin. That information was wrong…The young person themselves have made clear that he was in fact 16 at the time, so I want to correct the Dáil record to reflect that he was in fact 16 years of age when these texts were sent. I have now written to the young person and his mother offering a full unequivocal and sincere apology. What happened this young person was wrong,” Ms. McDonald stated.

Impact and Aftermath

The former Sinn Féin member, who received the texts, confirmed to the media that he was 16 at the time, not 17. He criticized the party’s handling of Mr. Ó Donnghaile’s resignation, specifically the lack of transparency regarding the true reasons for his departure. He also requested a direct apology from Ms. McDonald. An attempt by Fine Gael TD Ciarán Cannon to raise the issue further in the Dáil was deemed out of order by Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl.
