Belfast Woman Found Dead: Suspect Refused Bail in Dublin Court

A 31-year-old man, Ahmed Abdirahman, appeared in court in Dublin, Ireland, facing charges related to the death of 22-year-old Mary Ward, a mother-of-one from Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Ms. Ward’s body was discovered at her Melrose Street residence in south Belfast on October 1st. Police launched a murder investigation, revealing she died from a laceration to her neck. A broken piece of glass, stained with blood, was found at the scene.

Mr. Abdirahman, originally from Somalia, was arrested in Dublin on October 11th. Detectives discovered he had traveled to Dublin by bus shortly after Ms. Ward’s disappearance. His arrest followed the use of a Revolut card linked to his phone, which was allegedly found at Ms. Ward’s home.

During his court appearance, prosecutors presented evidence suggesting Mr. Abdirahman posed a flight risk. Det Sgt James King highlighted his departure from Northern Ireland, lack of ties to the Republic, and previous injuries sustained, which he claimed resulted from a fall involving broken glass.

Messages recovered from Mr. Abdirahman’s phone indicated a tumultuous relationship between himself and Ms. Ward. However, Ms. Ward’s phone remains missing.

Mr. Abdirahman’s legal representation argued for bail, citing his lack of prior convictions and residency status in Ireland. However, Ms. Justice Caroline Biggs, presiding over the High Court, ruled against bail, stating she believed Mr. Abdirahman would attempt to evade justice.

Under Irish law, individuals can be charged and tried in the Republic for crimes allegedly committed in Northern Ireland. Mr. Abdirahman is scheduled to appear in court again on November 15th.

This tragic case highlights the complexities of cross-border investigations and the challenges faced by authorities in ensuring justice is served.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
