ChatGPT Now Cites Elon MuskS Grokipedia: A Shift in AI information Sources?
Recent testing suggests OpenAI’s ChatGPT is increasingly utilizing Grokipedia, the AI-powered encyclopedia created by Elon Musk’s xAI, as a source for its responses. The findings, reported by The Guardian, reveal that the GPT-5.2 model referenced Grokipedia in nine instances across twelve queries focused on specialized subjects like Iranian politics adn the biography of historian Richard Evans.
Interestingly, the AI did not cite Grokipedia when responding to questions about widely publicized events – such as the January 6th Capitol riot or the HIV epidemic – topics where the encyclopedia has faced prior criticism for inaccuracies. Grokipedia’s inclusion appears to be concentrated on more obscure and niche areas of knowlege, a trend also observed in Anthropic’s Claude model.
OpenAI maintains that ChatGPT’s web searches encompass a broad spectrum of sources and perspectives, and that security filters and a citation system are in place to mitigate risks and ensure transparency.
However, xAI responded to inquiries with a dismissive statement regarding “conventional media lies.” This, coupled with the use of a potentially unreliable source, has raised concerns among disinformation researchers. They warn that linking AI responses to questionable resources like Grokipedia could inadvertently lend those resources greater credibility in the eyes of users.
Launched in October 2025, Grokipedia distinguishes itself through complete automation; all content is generated and updated solely by the grok AI, without human oversight. This fully automated approach is a key differentiator from platforms like Wikipedia, which rely on community-based editing.
