Matteo Berrettini Named 2024 ATP Comeback Player of the Year
Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini has been awarded the prestigious Comeback Player of the Year title at the 2024 ATP Awards. This recognition comes after an impressive return to form following a challenging period of injuries.
From Setback to Success
Berrettini’s 2023 season was unfortunately cut short due to a ruptured ankle ligament sustained during the US Open. He was then forced to withdraw from the Australian Open in 2024 due to a new foot injury, further delaying his comeback. However, the determined athlete persevered, finally returning to competition in March with a valiant effort at an ATP Challenger Tour event in Phoenix.
Despite a close loss to Andy Murray in Miami, Berrettini proved his resilience and talent by winning the ATP 250 tournament in Marrakech.
A Resurgence on the Court
Although a brief illness stalled his progress, Berrettini returned with a powerful surge, reaching the final in Stuttgart in June and then capturing back-to-back titles in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel in July. This incredible run saw him achieve a 10-match winning streak and solidify his place as a force to be reckoned with on the clay courts.
“When you’re not able to do your job and what you like to do, then it’s always a struggle. So I’m really appreciating every moment that I have to spend on court, to perform and give my best,” Berrettini shared with the press at the Rolex Shanghai Masters. “I know it’s a process. I did a great job this year to build up again my ranking, and I’m feeling good.”
Cementing His Legacy
Berrettini’s impressive comeback culminated in a 32-12 record for the season. He capped off his triumphant return by playing a pivotal role in Italy’s Davis Cup title defense, clinching crucial singles wins in the final rounds. This victory served as a testament to his unwavering dedication and athletic prowess.
Matteo Berrettini has set a remarkable example of perseverance and determination in the face of adversity. His remarkable comeback in 2024 is an inspiration to all aspiring athletes around the world.
