Matthew Schaefer’s Emotional Return to Toronto Fueled by Mother’s Legacy

Toronto, ON – New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer is set to play his first NHL game in his hometown of Toronto on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The game carries profound emotional weight for the 18-year-old, as it comes amidst a backdrop of personal loss and a deep connection to his late mother, Jennifer.

A Homecoming Years in the Making

Schaefer, originally from Hamilton, Ontario, anticipates having “close to 1,000” family and friends in attendance at Scotiabank Arena . His father, Todd Schaefer, recalled a childhood video of Matthew enthusiastically cheering for the Maple Leafs, a scene that now resonates with added significance as his son prepares to compete against them on the ice.

Jim Nyhuus: A Steadfast Mentor

The influence of Jennifer Schaefer on Matthew’s life is deeply felt, and one individual who understands this impact is Jim Nyhuus, a former minor hockey coach and close mentor. Nyhuus will be present at the Islanders’ morning skate on Tuesday . He coached Schaefer during the 2022-23 season when he played for the Halton Hurricanes in the South Central Triple A U16 league, where Schaefer recorded 32 points in 25 regular-season games and 14 points in five playoff games .

A Source of Strength During Difficult Times

Nyhuus became a crucial support system for Matthew during his mother’s illness. Nyhuus recalls Matthew’s unwavering strength even while grappling with his mother’s health challenges. The two maintained a weekly text exchange, providing a consistent line of support.

An Act of Kindness Remembered

Nyhuus’s family experienced a serious car accident in August 2023, resulting in significant injuries to his wife, Baillie, including eight broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and fractures to her vertebrae. Despite facing her own battle with cancer, Jennifer Schaefer, along with Todd and Johnny Schaefer, delivered a gift basket to the Nyhuus family while Baillie was in intensive care . Nyhuus described the gesture as profoundly moving, highlighting the Schaefer family’s humility and selflessness.

A Legacy of Character

Nyhuus believes Matthew embodies the qualities his mother exemplified, stating that he is “a better person than he is a hockey player” . He anticipates a heartwarming experience witnessing Matthew play in Toronto, surrounded by those who share a deep appreciation for his character and the legacy of his mother.

Nyhuus Continues Coaching Commitment

Jim Nyhuus, alongside Tristyn Svetek, will continue to coach the Oakville Hornets U18AA team for the 2026-2027 season .
