Mattia Furlani Recovers from Hamstring Injury, Eyes European Championships
Mattia Furlani, the Italian long jumper and world indoor and outdoor champion, is progressing in his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained during the Diamond League in Xiamen on May 23, 2023, according to an interview with Libero. The 18-year-old athlete, who initially feared the injury could jeopardize his season, has since resumed training and aims to compete at the European Championships in Birmingham from August 10 to 16, 2023.
Recovery Progress and Immediate Goals
Furlani described the injury as a “spavento” (scare) but emphasized that the severity was less than initially feared. “We’ve been monitoring the situation closely and are slowly reintroducing training,” he said. “The sensations are good, and I’ve already started jumping again.”

The athlete’s recovery timeline aligns with the European Championships, a key event for Italy’s long jump team. Furlani acknowledged the challenges of balancing rehabilitation with preparation, stating, “The injury slowed things down, but the goal is to arrive in the best possible shape.”
Italian Long Jump Team’s Global Ambitions
Furlani highlighted Italy’s rising status in global athletics, citing recent performances at competitions like the 2022 World Championships in Nanchino, where the team finished in the top three of the medal table, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where the country achieved historic success. “We’re already a global power,” he said. “The moment is important, but there’s always room to improve.”
His comments reflect broader optimism within the Italian athletics community, which has seen a surge in talent and competitive results over the past two years. However, Furlani cautioned against overconfidence, noting the unpredictability of the long jump. “All the top athletes are European, so it will be a tough battle,” he said.
Long-Term Aspirations: Tokyo, Paris, and Beyond
Furlani’s focus extends beyond the European Championships. He expressed a desire to replicate the “emotions” of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which he called “a different kind of journey” compared to the World Championships. “The Olympics is something unique,” he said. “Riviving those moments would be fantastic.”
Looking ahead, Furlani has set his sights on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where he plans to compete in the long jump. His training regimen, he noted, already includes specific preparations for the event. “I think about Los Angeles a lot,” he said. “It’s the jump I’m working on most.”
