Max Verstappen faces an unusual April with the cancellation of both the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Formula 1 Grand Prix due to the ongoing turbulent situation in the Middle East.1 However, the four-time F1 World Champion will remain active, focusing on preparations for the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in May, with potential participation in additional Nürburgring Nordschleife (NLS) races.
Adapting to an Unexpected Break
Verstappen acknowledged the adjustment required with a month free during a typically busy period on the Formula 1 calendar.4 He recently participated in the NLS2 race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, securing a dominant victory as preparation for the 24-hour endurance race.4
NLS Victory and Potential Disqualification
Despite his successful performance in NLS2, Verstappen faced a setback when the NLS organization withdrew his car from the competition.4 Prior to learning of the disqualification, Verstappen expressed his satisfaction with the race, stating, “It could have been worse, especially because we drove two different cars. For me, this weekend was mainly about getting a feel for the car on the Nordschleife. That was really enjoyable.”4
Extensive Preparation and Simulator Work
Verstappen emphasized the importance of preparation, noting his extensive practice on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, particularly utilizing a simulator.4 “In recent years I have spent a lot of time in the simulator, as well specifically for this circuit. That helps enormously when you drive here for the first time, because you at least know where to go,” he explained.4 He also highlighted the unique atmosphere and passionate fanbase surrounding the event.
Looking Ahead: NLS3 and Schedule Flexibility
Verstappen expressed his desire to participate in as many races as possible at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, contingent on the Formula 1 calendar.4 With the April F1 races canceled, opportunities may arise for him to compete in NLS3.4 When asked about the possibility, Verstappen stated, “We are looking at the possibilities. It depends on whether it is practically feasible, but I always enjoy driving here.”4
Red Bull Powertrains Performance
Prior to the schedule changes, Verstappen had also been actively involved in testing the new Red Bull Powertrains engine in Bahrain, describing the performance as “very positive” and “amazing to see” for a new manufacturer.2 He noted the team’s progress and the reliability of the new power unit during pre-season testing.2
