Ireland Cruise to Victory in Georgia, One Foot in Euro 2025 Play-Off Final
The Republic of Ireland are one step closer to their historic first appearance at the European Championships after a convincing 6-0 victory over Georgia in the first leg of their Euro 2025 play-off semi-final.
The Irish dominated the match from start to finish, despite facing a more organized Georgian side than in their 9-0 win on their last visit two years ago.
Early Pressure, late Breakthrough
Ireland started brightly, pressing high and creating numerous chances in the opening minutes. Katie McCabe, Denise O’Sullivan, and Abbie Larkin all came close to breaking the deadlock, but the Georgian defense held firm.
The breakthrough finally came in the 34th minute when a reckless challenge in the box earned Ireland a penalty. McCabe stepped up and coolly slotted home the spot-kick.
Second Half Surge
The Irish continued to press after the break and doubled their lead through Kyra Carusa, who backheeled home a low cross from Larkin. McCabe then added a second with a stunning long-range strike, catching the Georgian goalkeeper off guard.
Substitute Jessie Stapleton added a third with a close-range finish from a corner, before Marissa Sheva and Aoife Mannion sealed the rout with late goals.
Gleeson’s Tactical Prowess
Irish manager Eileen Gleeson made five changes to the starting lineup, with Abbie Larkin earning a start at right wing-back and Julie-Ann Russell partnering Carusa upfront. The tactical adjustments paid off, as Ireland controlled the game from start to finish.
Looking Ahead to the Final
The tie is effectively over heading into the second leg at Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday. However, Gleeson will be looking for a strong performance from her team ahead of the final against either Wales or Slovakia in November.
The stakes will be higher in the final, but Ireland showed their quality and determination in Tbilisi. They are now well-positioned to secure their place at the European Championships for the first time in their history.
