Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald to Correct Dáil Record After Senatorial Text Scandal
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has committed to correcting the Dáil record regarding her statement last week concerning the inappropriate texts sent by party senator Niall Ó Donnghaile to a teenager.
“It is very important that the record of the Dáil is accurate, so of course it will be corrected,” she said.
This announcement follows continued pressure from the Coalition leaders, who have demanded clarification from Ms McDonald regarding her statement about Mr Ó Donnghaile’s resignation. Taoiseach Simon Harris expressed his desire to know what actions Ms McDonald plans to take, while Tánaiste Micheál Martin emphasized the persistent unanswered questions regarding the matter.
Teenager’s Age and Apology Request
The teenager involved has contradicted previous statements made by Sinn Féin, claiming he was 16 at the time of the contact, not 17. He has also requested an apology from Ms McDonald for her praise of Mr Ó Donnghaile as he left the Oireachtas.
Mr Harris criticized Ms McDonald for not addressing the teenager’s request, stating that instead she focused on demanding an apology over a satirical media piece. “Because I thought from listening to her in the past, from listening to all of us in the past. I thought we now adopt a victim-centred approach to these issues,” he said.
Calls for Transparency and Investigation
Mr Martin demanded further clarification on why Sinn Féin did not fully inform the Oireachtas about the reasons behind Mr Ó Donnghaile’s resignation. He questioned whether the Oireachtas was intentionally kept in the dark and if there was a deliberate attempt to conceal the truth.
“More clarification is needed in respect of that entire saga, not just in terms of the Brian Stanley affair but also in terms of Niall Ó Donnghaile and to what degree was the Oireachtas blindsided and to what degree was there a cover up in preventing the Oireachtas from knowing fully as to the reasons as to why he resigned,” he stated.
Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman echoed the call for transparency, agreeing with Mr Harris that Ms McDonald needs to address her initial statements about Mr Ó Donnghaile’s resignation. He expressed his view that her judgment was “flawed” in her decision to praise him despite the circumstances.
McDonald’s Previous Statement and Future Steps
Ms McDonald’s prior Dáil statement expressed “deep sorrow and anger” over the young person’s experience and emphasized that the party contacted the PSNI and social services upon receiving information about the incident.
With these developments, all eyes will be on Ms McDonald’s next steps as she works to correct the Dáil record and address the growing concerns surrounding this incident.
