Global Measles Cases Rise, Indonesia Strengthens Surveillance and Immunization Efforts
Jakarta – Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has acknowledged a global increase in measles cases, including a rise within Indonesia, and outlined the government’s response to prevent further spread. The Ministry of Health is strengthening surveillance and accelerating immunization programs to address the growing concern.
Global Trend and Contributing Factors
Minister Sadikin stated that the increase in measles cases is a worldwide phenomenon, not limited to a single country. Several factors are contributing to this trend, including decreased immunization coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic and increased international travel, which elevates the risk of cross-country transmission.
Indonesia’s Response: Surveillance and Immunization
The Indonesian government is actively monitoring the situation both domestically, and internationally. Efforts are focused on strengthening surveillance systems to quickly identify and respond to outbreaks. A key component of the response is accelerating routine and catch-up immunization programs for children who have not been fully vaccinated. This is considered crucial for building herd immunity and reducing the risk of widespread outbreaks.
Recent Outbreak in East Java
In August 2025, a measles outbreak in Sumenep Regency, East Java province, resulted in at least 17 deaths, primarily among children. Minister Sadikin plans to visit the region to assess the situation firsthand.
Addressing Immunization Gaps
The Ministry of Health recognizes that disruptions to immunization programs during the COVID-19 pandemic have contributed to the current increase in cases. Similar disruptions led to a polio outbreak, highlighting the importance of maintaining consistent immunization schedules.
Outbreak Response Immunization (ORI) Campaign
To control the outbreak in Sumenep, authorities have initiated a large-scale measles vaccination campaign. As of August 24, 2025, 9,825 measles vaccine doses and vitamin A supplements had been distributed. The ORI campaign will run from August 25 to September 12, 2025, targeting children aged 9 months to 6 years, with a goal of vaccinating 95% of the population in Sumenep.
