A local television station in Tucson, Arizona, reported that Alleged kidnappers of Nancy Guthrie, 84, sent a ransom note with threats, demanding $6 million in exchange for his return alive.
The KGUN 9 channel noted that received a message setting the deadline at 5:00 pm on Monday, and warning that Guthrie’s life would be in danger if the requirement is not met. Other media outlets would also have received similar communications requesting payments in Bitcoin.
Authorities have not confirmed the authenticity of the notes or corroborated their origin. Both the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department indicated that they are aware of the messages and that they are being analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation.
The family asks for his return
The report comes after Savannah Guthrie, co-host of NBC’s Today show, posted a video on Instagram along with her siblings, Annie and Camron Guthrie, in which they beg for their mother’s return.
“We receive your message and we understand it. We ask you to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her,” Guthrie said. He added that the family was willing to meet the demands to achieve his safe return.
The video, which lasted about 20 seconds, did not offer details about the content of the message received by the family nor did it confirm whether it was linked to the alleged ransom note sent to the media.
Messages without proof of life
According to local media reports, at least three news organizations received possible stories related to the case. None included proof of life, although one of them stated that Guthrie was fine.
KOLD station news director Jessica Bobula explained that one of the communications contained financial demands and deadlines, while a second note did not request money and differed in almost every way, although it seemed to try to prove that it came from the same sender.
Both messages were delivered to authorities along with technical information, such as IP addresses, for analysis.
Research in development
Nancy Guthrie was reported missing Sunday at noon after failing to show up for church. She was last seen the night before, around 9:45 pm, after dinner at her daughter Annie’s house, located several kilometers from her residence.
The Pima County sheriff indicated that a possible kidnapping that occurred overnight is being investigated, and that so far there are no suspects or persons of interest identified. Authorities believe Guthrie “is still out there” and reiterated their commitment to bringing her back alive.
The investigation is supported by state and federal agencies, including the FBI, which is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to solving the case.
