Mediation talks aimed at resolving a dispute over severance packages at BD’s Drogheda plant have reached an impasse. SIPTU, the union representing workers at the facility, has accused BD of failing to engage constructively in negotiations, leading to the breakdown of discussions.

Plant Closure Sparks Dispute

The dispute stems from BD’s announcement in July that it would be closing the Drogheda plant, resulting in the loss of approximately 200 jobs over the next two and a half years. SIPTU members have staged industrial action in recent weeks, protesting the closure and demanding fair severance packages.

BD Expresses Disappointment

“We explored options to see if agreement could be reached,” a BD spokesperson stated. “Unfortunately, the mediator adjourned the process as he was no longer able to assist the parties in reaching an agreed solution.”

BD expressed disappointment that mediation efforts proved unsuccessful and confirmed that the matter would now be referred to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC).

SIPTU Remains Open to Resolution

SIPTU, meanwhile, expressed regret at the breakdown in talks, stating its willingness to participate in WRC hearings whenever scheduled. “It is regrettable that the mediation talks have broken down,” a SIPTU spokesperson said. “We are agreeable to attending the WRC whenever a hearing is called.”

The situation at BD’s Drogheda plant highlights the ongoing challenges faced by workers in the face of plant closures and the importance of fair labor practices.
