[메디게이트뉴스 박민식 기자] The Korean Medical Residents Association (Daejeon Association) holds a temporary general meeting of delegates to discuss ways to respond to the problem of increasing the number of medical schools. Attention is focused on what conclusions the medical residents who were at the center of the struggle during the 2,000-person increase during the previous Yoon Seok-yeol administration will come up with.
As a result of Medigate News coverage on the 11th, it was confirmed that Daejeon Cooperative is planning to hold an online extraordinary general meeting of delegates at 2 p.m. on the 14th. The agenda is about responding to current issues in the medical field.
On the 10th, the government decided to increase the number of medical school students by an average of 668 students per year for five years from 2027, and it is expected to be an opportunity to discuss response measures at the Daejeon Association level.
Until now, the prevailing view is that it will be difficult for residents, medical students, etc. to take collective action as they did during past legislative conflicts. However, as the scale of the increase is larger than originally expected, the possibility of unexpected conclusions coming from the general meeting cannot be ruled out.
At the National Medical Representative Conference held on the 31st of last month, before the actual increase in medical schools was announced, Daejeon Association Chairman Han Seong-john revealed the results of an internal survey showing that 75% of residents responded that ‘an active response is necessary’ to the issue of medical school expansion.
At the time, Chairman Han reportedly stated that he could not accept the government’s plan to increase the number of employees by 580 proposed by the Health and Medical Policy Review Committee.
