Medvedev’s Path to Victory and Upcoming Match Against Wawrinka
The former world No. 1 will now face Stan Wawrinka in the Round of 16. Wawrinka advanced after defeating Benjamin Hassan in his opening match. Medvedev holds a 3-2 head-to-head record against Wawrinka, with their last encounter being at the 2025 Rotterdam Open .
Medvedev on the Challenges of Professional Tennis
Following his win against Shang, Medvedev discussed the often-unseen difficulties faced by professional tennis players. He emphasized the toll that constant travel and competition take on the body and mind .
“It’s very complex,” Medvedev stated. “What people first see is we’re playing in front of thousands of people, we’re getting great money… And the first thought is like, Okay, why are they complaining at all? Like, they should not.”
He highlighted the subtle but cumulative effects of changes in environment – different balls, courts, hotels, beds, and pillows – and the impact of time zone changes and varying food quality. He explained that these factors, while seemingly minor, can significantly affect performance over the course of a demanding season with approximately 40 tournaments.
“The time change and of course the food change… All of this would be uncomplicated to handle if you wouldn’t have a match to play the next day against an opponent that wants to win as much as you,” Medvedev added. “And if you don’t win, you lose and you perceive I am bad.”
Dubai Championship Outlook
Medvedev’s projected path to the Dubai title includes potential matchups against Karen Khachanov or Jenson Brooksby in the quarter-finals, followed by Felix Auger-Aliassime, Jiri Lehecka, or Arthur Fils in the semi-finals. The final could see him face Alexander Bublik, Jack Draper, or Jakub Mensik .
