Mercedes Struggles with Understeer and Engine Optimization
Despite Russell’s leading time, Mercedes experienced a challenging first day of testing. Both Russell and his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, reported struggling with understeer. The team noted that the energy deployment through the hybrid system wasn’t performing at its optimal level. Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the difficulties, stating, “A difficult birth for us. We were not in such a solid place on the chassis or power-unit side, but all things are surmountable, so interesting, exciting challenges to overcome in second practice.”
McLaren Faces Gearbox Issues, Norris Down the Order
McLaren also encountered setbacks during the session, with gearbox problems plaguing their efforts. World Champion Lando Norris finished 19th, a significant distance behind the leading pace. Piastri, however, expressed growing comfort with the car, stating, “My running in the afternoon felt solid and we made good progress. I am feeling more comfortable with each lap, so I am looking forward to getting back out on the track tomorrow afternoon.” Associated Press.
Other Teams’ Performance
Antonelli secured the eighth-fastest time, ahead of Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto. Nico Hulkenberg of Audi rounded out the top 10. Haas driver Esteban Ocon finished 11th, positioned between Williams’ Carlos Sainz and Racing Bull’s Liam Lawson. Valtteri Bottas, driving for the modern Cadillac team, was 17th, while his teammate Sergio Perez finished in 20th.
