Melon Diesel: The Gibraltar Band Making a Comeback with ‘Mr. Bond’s Gira’
At the finish of the 1990s, a band from Gibraltar emerged in Spain with a distinct sound, influenced by Anglo-Saxon music, resonating with a generation. Melon Diesel, with hits like “Countercurrent,” “For You,” and “I Aim for a Path,” quickly became anthems of the era. Now, over two decades later, the group is back with a tour – “Mr. Bond’s Gira,” named after their celebrated album – that has already sold out shows in cities including Madrid and Gibraltar.
A Brief But Intense Rise
Melon Diesel gained prominence in Spain around 2000, but the project dissolved just three years later following the release of Real (2003). This album featured a greater emphasis on English lyrics, a direction pushed by their record label, but it didn’t achieve the same success as their earlier work. The band also faced a temporary hiatus due to the singer’s vocal health issues.
Rediscovering a Lasting Impact
Despite their relatively short period of activity, Melon Diesel left a significant mark. “Two and a bit years is too little time to exit a mark,” the band members reflected, “or so we thought.” Current concerts demonstrate otherwise, with front rows filled with both longtime fans and a younger audience discovering their music for the first time. The band notes a “beautiful mix” of attendees, including those who grew up with their music bringing their children, alongside those too young to have experienced the initial wave of popularity.
From Taxi to Melon Diesel: A Return to Roots
After performing under the name Taxi for several years, the band decided to revert to their original moniker. This decision was both musically and strategically driven. “Musically we perceive more identified with that stage,” they explained. In the digital age, the name change also improves online visibility: “If you put ‘Taxi’ in Google, everything comes out except the group. If you put ‘Melon Diesel’, we come out.”
Rebuilding and Collaborations
The reunion wasn’t immediate. The band needed to rebuild their infrastructure, including social media presence, a website, and a team. “Everything was obsolete. We wanted to, but we had to start from scratch.” The upcoming work will feature collaborations with artists like Iván Ferreiro and Morgan, with more surprises promised. “All songs have collaborations, but we want to let it fall little by little,” they said.
Focus on Spain, Not Competition
Melon Diesel is focused on the Spanish market and has no plans to participate in music competitions like Benidorm Fest or television talent shows. “Music is not a competition, it is art. People already know us and our songs.” While their roots are in Gibraltar, giving them a bilingual identity, they are not currently considering an international expansion, stating they “have things to say here.”
A Mature Perspective and Gratitude
The band members acknowledge they approach this return with a different perspective, being older and wiser. “Being 22 is not the same as turning 50.” They express gratitude for the opportunity and a desire to make the most of it, as long as the audience continues to respond positively. The return has proven that the “Melon sound” never truly disappeared; it was simply waiting for the right moment to resurface.
On February 7, 2026, Melon Diesel posted on Facebook thanking Gibraltar for the successful start to their “La Gira de Mr.Bond” tour.
In June 2024, Melon Diesel performed in Gibraltar on June 21st, celebrating the 25th anniversary of their album ‘La Cuesta Mister Bond’ at the Europa Sports Indoor Complex. Tickets were priced at £40 and available through www.buytickets.gi.
