norwich University Rugby Players Honored for Academic and Athletic Prowess
Northfield, VT – June 26, 2025 – norwich University’s men’s rugby program is celebrating the academic achievements of four of its players, who have been recognized as Scholastic All-Americans by National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) for the 2024-25 academic year. This prestigious designation highlights the dedication these student-athletes demonstrate both on the rugby pitch and within the classroom, a testament to the program’s commitment to holistic progress.
Balancing Rigor: The Scholar-Athlete Ideal
The NCR Scholastic All-American award isn’t simply about athletic skill; it’s a recognition of well-rounded excellence. To qualify, players must maintain a Grade Point Average of 3.5 or higher and participate in at least half of their team’s A-side matches, weather in the fast-paced 7s format or the strategic 15s game. This year, 1,284 student-athletes nationally achieved this standard, representing a 21% increase from the previous year – a clear indication of the rising academic standards within collegiate rugby. This growth reflects a broader trend in collegiate athletics, where academic performance is increasingly prioritized alongside athletic success. For example, the NCAA has recently increased its Academic Progress Rate (APR) requirements, pushing universities to support their athletes’ academic journeys.
Honorees Reflect Norwich’s Commitment to Excellence
The four Cadets earning this distinction are seniors Brady Kline and Aiden Maher, and juniors Dumisani Janda and Jeff Pappalardo. Norwich’s Head Coach, Bob Weggler, emphasized the importance of academics within the program, stating, “These student-athletes have achieved excellence in their studies, and I am so proud of all of them. All our players understand that their education is the primary focus.” This beliefs is crucial, as the demands of a Division II rugby schedule – with rigorous training and travel – require exceptional time management and discipline.
Spring 7s Success and National Recognition
The spring 7s season proved particularly accomplished for Kline, Maher, and Pappalardo, culminating in a commendable sixth-place finish at the 2025 Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) held in Boyds, Maryland. Their contributions were instrumental in a season marked by victories at prestigious tournaments like the Bermuda 7s and the Old Blue 7s,ultimately securing Norwich’s seventh consecutive appearance at the CRC. The team finished the spring with an impressive 15-7 record. The 7s format, known for its speed and open play, demands a unique skillset, requiring players to be versatile and adaptable – qualities these honorees clearly possess.
Dominance in 15s Play and a National Tournament Run
Janda, alongside Kline and Pappalardo, also earned recognition for their performance during the fall 15s season. Norwich demonstrated its strength in the conventional 15s game, reaching the NCR Division II National Tournament and securing a well-deserved third-place finish. A decisive 72-17 victory over Towson in the third-place match underscored the team’s power and tactical prowess. Pappalardo, in particular, emerged as a key leader, consistently making impactful plays in both 7s and 15s formats. His ability to excel in both disciplines highlights his exceptional athleticism and rugby IQ.
National Landscape and Future outlook
Norwich’s success places it among a select group of NCR programs prioritizing academic achievement. Nationally, Brown University led the way with 29 Scholastic All-Americans, followed by Georgetown University (27), the University of South Carolina (23), and Dartmouth College (22). Jeremy Treece, CEO of NCR, lauded the honorees, stating, “These young leaders continue to elevate the standard of collegiate rugby through their commitment to academic and athletic excellence.”
The increasing number of Scholastic All-Americans year after year signals a positive trajectory for collegiate rugby, demonstrating a growing emphasis on the holistic development of student-athletes. Norwich University’s continued success in this area reinforces its position as a leading program, not only on the field but also in the classroom.
