UNI Opens Season with Dominating 3-0 Victory Over Western Illinois
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team kicked off its 2024 season in commanding fashion, sweeping Western Illinois 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-18) at the UNI Dome on Friday night.
The Panthers showcased a powerful offensive attack and a stifling defense, controlling the match from start to finish. UNI hit .358 as a team, led by senior outside hitter Kira Fallert, who tallied 13 kills with a .478 hitting percentage.freshman middle blocker Emily Demuth made an immediate impact, contributing 8 kills and 4 blocks.
“It’s always great to start the season with a win, especially at home,” said Head Coach Bobbi Petersen. “I thought our team came out with a lot of energy and executed our game plan well. We have a lot of potential, and I’m excited to see how we continue to grow throughout the season.”
UNI’s defense was equally impressive, holding Western Illinois to a .182 hitting percentage and recording 9 total blocks. Libero Kate Meyermann anchored the back row with 14 digs.
The first set saw UNI jump out to an early lead and never look back, closing it out with a dominant 25-16 score. The Panthers continued their strong play in the second set, hitting .400 and securing a 25-14 victory.UNI completed the sweep with a 25-18 win in the third set,showcasing their depth and consistency.
