Menstrual Equity Campaign Launched in Sinaloa, Mexico to Improve Access and Education
In Cubiri de Portelas, Sinaloa de Leyva, a new campaign, “For dignified menstruation in young women,” has been launched at the Gabriel Leyva Solano Secondary School to address the challenges many students face regarding access to menstrual products, and information. The initiative aims to reduce school absences and combat the stigma surrounding menstruation.
Addressing a Critical Demand
State officials recognize that acquiring sanitary towels is not always a priority for families due to economic limitations or lack of access, particularly in remote communities. Beyond the financial burden, emotional factors like shame, fear, and misinformation contribute to young women missing school and avoiding seeking necessary supplies. Gabriel Leyva Solano Secondary School is at the forefront of this effort.
Campaign Components
The campaign includes the direct distribution of menstrual hygiene kits to students in need. Alongside the provision of supplies, educational and health personnel are providing guidance on menstrual hygiene to eliminate prejudices and normalize the topic both inside and outside the classroom.
Infrastructure Needs Highlighted
The campaign also underscored the need for improved infrastructure in schools, specifically access to drinking water and adequate hygiene facilities, to ensure students can manage their menstrual health with dignity. Municipal officials, educational representatives, and the DIF system have agreed that access to menstrual health should not be determined by location or income.
