Merel Conijn Protests KNSB Decision, Withdraws from NK Allround Championships
Heerenveen, Netherlands – Speed skater Merel Conijn withdrew from the NK Allround Championships in Heerenveen after protesting a decision by the KNSB (Royal Dutch Skating Federation) regarding qualification for the World Championships.
Protest Over World Championship Qualification
Conijn expressed her frustration with the KNSB’s pre-selection of Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong, Joy Beune, and Marijke Groenewoud for the World Championships, arguing that the NK Allround should have been an opportunity to earn a qualifying spot. She initially considered not starting the 500-meter race due to her dissatisfaction, stating, “I was extremely angry about that,” according to her coach Jillert Anema NOS.
After completing the 500 meters, Conijn ultimately chose to withdraw before the 3000-meter race. Anema indicated that had Conijn won the NK Allround with a strong point total, they would have considered legal action against the KNSB RTL Nieuws.
