Killeen Gets a Speed Boost: Metronet Brings Fiber Internet to Town

Killeen residents can now experience the power of fiber-optic internet, thanks to the arrival of Metronet, a leading fiber-optic provider. The company announced the launch of its services in Killeen this week, a move that promises to revolutionize internet connectivity for both homes and businesses.

Metronet’s fiber network offers symmetrical speeds, meaning both upload and download speeds are equally fast. Residential customers can enjoy blazing-fast speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second, while businesses can access a whopping 10 gigabits per second. This significantly reduces buffering, lag, and upload times, making it ideal for activities like streaming, gaming, video conferencing, and large file transfers.

"Metronet’s arrival is a game-changer for Killeen," said Jill Cordes, a Metronet vice president, in a statement. "We’re committed to providing the community with a reliable, high-speed connection they can depend on for all their internet needs."

Construction for the Killeen network began in the spring of 2024, with plans to expand services throughout the city in the coming months. Metronet emphasizes its commitment to transparency by notifying residents 30 days in advance of any construction work and posting yard signs to keep the community informed.

This expansion is part of Metronet’s broader strategy to bring high-speed fiber internet to communities across the United States. The company already serves over 300 areas in 18 states and has ongoing projects in other Texas cities, including Bryan-College Station.

Killeen joins a growing list of cities transitioning to fiber-optic internet. Several other providers, like Brightspeed, Spectrum, and Ubiquity, are also installing fiber-optic cables in the city as part of a larger municipal project expected to be completed by 2028.

This surge in fiber-optic infrastructure development reflects a national trend towards faster, more reliable internet access. As more homes and businesses rely on internet connectivity for essential tasks, the demand for high-speed connections continues to rise.

Fiber-optic internet: The future of connectivity?

This growing trend towards fiber-optic internet is driven by several factors, including:

  • Faster Speeds: Fiber-optic internet offers significantly faster speeds compared to traditional cable or DSL connections, allowing for seamless streaming, gaming, and video conferencing.
  • Increased Reliability: Fiber-optic internet is less susceptible to interference and outages, providing a more stable and reliable connection.
  • Enhanced Capacity: Fiber optic cables have a higher bandwidth capacity, allowing for more data to be transmitted at once. This is essential for supporting the demands of large businesses and growing communities.

As more cities, like Killeen, embrace fiber-optic technology, access to high-speed internet will become more widespread, empowering individuals and businesses to participate fully in the digital economy and the increasingly interconnected world.
