Mets’ Bichette Transition, Lindor’s Recovery, and Pitching Updates

The New York Mets are navigating a spring training filled with positional adjustments, injury recoveries, and promising pitching developments. The arrival of Bo Bichette has shifted the infield dynamic, while Francisco Lindor is working his way back from a recent injury. Meanwhile, several pitching prospects and veterans are making strides as the team prepares for the 2026 season.

Bichette’s Move to Third Base and Baty’s Versatility

With the signing of Bo Bichette, Brett Baty has transitioned to a super utility role. MLB.com reports that Baty is now seeing playing time in the outfield and at first base, in addition to his experience at third and second base. This versatility provides manager Carlos Mendoza with flexibility, allowing Baty to fill in for Bichette or Marcus Semien if needed.

Mendoza emphasized the value of Baty’s role, stating he is “on board” with the arrangement and will have opportunities to contribute in multiple positions. According to MLB.com, Baty finished the 2025 season strong, posting a .254/.313/.435 batting line with 18 home runs in 370 plate appearances from mid-May onward.

Lindor’s Recovery and Opening Day Outlook

Shortstop Francisco Lindor is recovering from a left hamate fracture and is optimistic about his chances of being ready for Opening Day. The New York Post reports that Lindor has begun taking batting practice and playing catch without any ill effects. He expressed confidence in his ability to return in time for the March 26 season opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Lindor underwent surgery on February 11, with an initial recovery projection of six weeks. His progress suggests a potential return within that timeframe.

Pitching Staff Updates

The Mets’ pitching staff is also showing positive signs. Christian Scott, recovering from Tommy John surgery, reached 96 mph and threw 48 pitches over 2 2/3 innings in an exhibition game against Israel’s WBC team. The New York Post noted that manager Carlos Mendoza was impressed with Scott’s command during his return.

Reliever A.J. Minter, who underwent lat surgery last year, pitched in a minor league game, marking his first game action since the surgery. Mendoza indicated a possible return in late April.

Semien Excited About Bichette Reunion

SNY reports that Marcus Semien is enthusiastic about reuniting with former Toronto teammate Bo Bichette. Rising Apple highlights Semien’s experience transitioning positions, making him a valuable mentor for Bichette as he adjusts to third base. SI.com notes that Bichette and Semien developed a strong bond during their time together in Toronto.

Non-Roster Invite Update

Non-roster invitee Robert Stock experienced shoulder discomfort while with Team Israel for the World Baseball Classic and will undergo an MRI.
